Our concept for your success

TÖNNIES Research pursues the objective of consistently working to improve livestock keeping conditions via scientific projects. In the same vein, we also dedicate ourselves to fulfilling the consumer expectations and social requirements placed on the pork production industry. We work hand in hand with our farmers and focus on practice as much as possible in order to smooth out the tension and reach a balance between economic constraints and modern livestock keeping.

RFID ear tagging to identify individual animals

The successful advent of digitalisation in crop production set the stage. The more pig keepers know about their herd, the better and more efficiently they can control production and healthcare management. Thanks to the latest digital technology, we have been delivering the perfect tools for this since 2016 and have therefore opened up new worlds of opportunities: The foundation for this is built by electronic transmitter eartags which consist of a coded data chip which can be activated and read by RFID (radio-frequency identification) within a radius of two metres. In practice, the individual codes for the frequency eartags can be made visible with the help of an scanner. In addition, the scanner enables other operating data to be linked to the frequency tag so that data on production and also on treatment can be assigned to each individual animal, and this can all be carried out directly in the stall. Whether it’s genetics, birth weight, fattening gains, feed data or health management, it can all be recorded and logged without any issues. Assigning data over the electronic eartag means that each pig can now have a personal “passport”. This means that you have a personalised, seamless volume of data information for the entire life cycle of each individual animal on your farm.

Finally, complete transparency

The slaughtering process can also be included thanks to our ear tags, which finally fulfils the long-held need for complete and transparent traceability of individual animals. We were thus also pioneers in installing RFID antennae for reading RFID eartags, leading the way for all slaughterhouses. Our system enables individual livestock data to be linked with the slaughter data for each individual animal so that extensive analyses can be carried out. Our system is also compatible with LF, UHF and FDX eartags. This means that you can choose between all the frequency ear tag options for your animals. The system enables individual animals to be tracked in real time, from the day that they are born to the day they are slaughtered, and therefore offers the option of complete transparency within the value chain for pork.

Less work – more efficiency

The potential conclusions on piglet quality and performance parameters, including slaughter, diagnostic data and classification data, provide you, as a pig keeper, with a comprehensive analysis of your herd, which can be used to establish optimal animal rearing via which you can reap a multitude of financial and industrial engineering advantages, such as shortened fattening times and therefore reduced costs for feed and housing. In addition, we bundle together all relevant information on your animals and make them available to you at any time, thanks to digital transmission, and you can do all this without battling with paperwork. This means that you can devote yourself entirely to your work.

TÖNNIES ANIMAL HEALTH DATABASE

The optimisation of slaughter pig production is not only an issue for the fattening farmer. The pig producer contributes to producing standardised slaughter carcasses, for example by selecting the correct boar. Here, recording and transferring animal health data can lead to sustainable improvement in the quality features for the animals for the pig producers and fatteners. The tight link between these elements enables optimal exploitation of the relevant production stages.

Our quality representative Birte Alpers deals with the individual requirements of each and every individual farm with the expertise she has gained over her many years of experience in production and animal husbandry as well as her natural instinct for business and animals. The conclusions that are drawn from this are compared with data that have already been logged and, if they can be, are optimised. Specifically, the integration of an animal health database enables Ms. Alpers to document the health status for piglet delivery operations and she can therefore can improve the quality of the piglet material in the long term. This means that both the individual operation and the entire value chain benefit.

Naturally, your security and protection of your data is of prime importance to us, including in the context of data bundling in our animal healthcare database. Digital recording, including specific analyses, inspections, sampling results, certificates and data recording forms, is designed and set up purely for internal use.

HYCARE® HYGIENE CONCEPT

In addition to traceability and animal health, pigpen hygiene is also essential in ensuring your economic success. This is because piglets and pigs are less stressed, less susceptible to pathogens and gain more weight per day when they have a healthy living environment. As a result, we are particularly delighted that our long-standing partner, the MS Schippers Group, has found an opportunity to perfect hygiene in pigpens: With the HyCare® concept, a system is developed in which animals can grow up in a healthy environment, and this can be achieved in any normal pigpen, when implemented to its fullest extent. The results speak for themselves: In addition to improvements in animal health and performance, the Schippers Group also reduces use of antibiotics with their concept.
